 Meta Tags Optimization

The Purpose of Meta Tags for Search Engine Optimization

Meta tags are still important for search engine optimization if you want to be found by the search engines. Your chosen keywords are used in the html codes in the main areas of a page e.g. title, keywords, description, heading, body, links, and alt tags. Here is a brief explanation of the purpose of each tag for Search Engine optimization, and some meta tag tips:

Title Keywords Meta Tag

The TITLE is a very important tag for top Search Engines like Altavista, Yahoo, Google, etc.,. Your page will be assigned additional points if it has keywords contained within the TITLE tag.

It is vital that you optimize your TITLE by including a keyword in it, which accurately describes the page content

Meta Description Tag

The words placed within the meta description tag are given some ‘weight’ with most search engines and can help a page to rank high in the search results for these particular words. Just as important:

The words placed in this tag appear under the title in a search engine's list of results (in most search engines)

The meta description tag is a snippet of HTML code that belongs inside the <Head> </Head> section of a Web page. It usually is placed after the title tag and before the meta keyword tag

If no information is supplied for this tag, or this tag is omitted from the HTML code of a Web page, the search engines will often use the first words that appear on the Web page as the description of the site that appears on search results pages.

Meta Keywords Tag

If you had to give up one meta tag, the meta keyword tag would be the one to choose. This tag is usually placed beneath the title and meta description tags in the <HEAD></HEAD> section of your pages' HTML code.

Some search engines still look for this tag, so it is useful to complete. A particular keyword should not be present more than three times in your Meta Keywords tag

Before you attempt to create a meta keyword tag (ideally these things should be done before the Web site is ever created):

 Choose your relevant keywords.
Write the site's content based on these keywords.
Create a title tag using the same keywords.
Create a meta description tag as a marketing sentence, also based on these keywords.

Header Tags

Header tags (<H> can be used to make large text. Place the text you want to become the header of the page, between the header tags. There are six sizes of font, with one being the largest and six being the smallest size. This appears in the title bar of a browser, and is the headline on your web page.

Most of the Search Engines search for the keywords in the Header Tags to get accurate optimisation of the site

Comment Tags

Comment tags provide a way for webmasters to make notes right on their pages. They are hidden in the HTML code and so are not visible to the site's ordinary users.

At times, text on your site may not be optimally created for search engine spiders. To combat this deficiency, consider using comment tags above your text blocks.

Image Alt Tags

IMAGE ALT tags are tiny pop-up boxes of text that appear when you position your mouse cursor over a webpage image. If you include these tags, it not only helps your visitors who are browsing with their images turned off, but also some search engines will index this text, so it could help your rankings. Be sure to use your most relevant keywords in these tags.

Most of the Search Engines look for the keywords in the Image Alt Tags to get the accurate position of the site

Link Text Tag

The HTML anchor (<a>) tag is designed to allow any text to be displayed as the clickable link.

Generally all Search Engines check for the keywords in the Link Text of the page
